A photo of myself at Umich.

Hi, my name is Yoko.

I'm a 1st-year M.S. student at Stanford University, studying Data Science and Computational and Mathematical Engineering. I'm excited about bringing impact to our society with data-driven decision-making, using machine learning and statistical data analysis. I'm also passionate about AI ethics, which was my undergraduate research topic.

In May 2020, I graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with B.S. in Data Science and B.M.A. in Piano Performance. Go Blue!
I feel very fortunate to have studied with Dr. H. V. Jagadish for my research in computational fact-checking, as well as Dr. Logan Skelton for piano.

COVID-19 Exploratory Analysis

Expressions

Autumn 2021

With a time-series dataset on COVID-19, I explore the effects of vaccinations against the disease on the confirmed number of cases and deaths. I conduct the analysis and create interactive visualizations the trends in cases, deaths, and vaccinations in the U.S. and aroud the world.

Facial Expression Recognition

Expressions

Autumn 2021

As we face a pandemic, it's become a norm to wear a mask while having a conversation with someone. It's difficult to know what kind of expression the other person is making when more than half of their face is covered. We aim to predict the expression of a masked face using ML models including Logistic Regression, SVM, and transfer learning with CNN and ResNet18.

Computational Fact-Checking

Newspaper

Summer 2020

MithraDetective is a web app embedded with a computational fact-checking system and an innovative tool to detect fake news and prevent the spread of misinformation. It has an interactive visual interface for detecting cherry-picking in a claim and discovering an alternative claim with more data support. To demonstrate its applicability in a real-world context, MithraDetective is preloaded with datasets to check claims about recent controversial issues including COVID-19 global warming.

Bio

Yoko Nagafuchi, originally from Tokyo, Japan, began her piano studies at the age of four. While living in California, she took lessons with Lorna Griffitt at the University of California, Irvine, and received coaching from Dranoff gold medalist Shinichiro Kato in Tokyo. She participated in the Young Pianists’ Beethoven Competition all four years of high school, and in 2017, performed in the winners' masterclass. She has also appeared as a soloist with the Orange County Symphony Orchestra. An active chamber musician, her trio was selected to perform at Carnegie Weill Hall in 2016.

At the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Yoko pursued a dual-degree in Piano Performance with Logan Skelton and Data Science. During the past summers she has participated in programs at the Aspen Music Festival and School and the Bowdoin International Music Festival, studying with Anton Nel, Alan Chow, and Kate Soyeon Lee. In master classes, she has worked with Menahem Pressler, Ronald Brautigam, Hie-Yon Choi, Jura Margulis, and Zhang Zuo.

About Me

I'm originally from Tokyo, Japan, and I lived in Irvine, CA for 6 years before college.
During my freetime, I enjoy light exercising such as hiking the Stanford Dish Loop Trail or walking a long distance around Stanford to grab coffee with friends! I also like to bake scones and make pizza for my family and friends.
